The dark pigment of their skin helps to protect them in the sun. They do still --require protection from the elements , but do not burn as readily.
--A very old heritage breed that forages exceptionally well. A trait that is being --lost quickly with the commercial breeds.
They tolerate the sun and the added fat layer provides protection from cold.
NEWS FLASH! The breed began with approx. 200 registered pigs. Maveric Heritage Ranch purchased most of the last remaining herd from the "keeper of the Mulefoots" Mr. RM Holiday. Arie McFarlen and Bret Kortie has had DNA testing done on their foundation stock. The AMHA, Mark Dibert began a Registry to track the geographic locations as well as diversity of the breed to ensure they are present for generations to come. Many individuals had doubts as to the susainability of this dying breed. Seven years later the AMHA has reported over 600 registered American Mulefoot Pigs! A far cry from the over 200 per year registered needed to upgrade from the American Livestock Breeds Conservancys "Criticaly Rare" designation, but moving in the right direction.
